[TamilNet, Monday, 10 March 2008, 02:50 GMT]
More than thirty international leftwing political parties and organisations who met last week as part of a conference organized by Fourth International in Amsterdam
made an appeal to “left wing and progressive forces to come forward in defence of the just cause of the Tamil people.” In a public statement they demanded that the
Sri Lankan government “stop imposing its will militarily on the Tamil people.”
Noting that the Sri Lankan government’s military onslaught on Tamils have met with heavy condemnation throughout the world, the thirty organizations and parties
pledged to lobby governments in their respective countries to call upon the Colombo to restore the ceasefire and stop killing civillians.
Earlier this month, the NSSP, the Sri Lanka section of the Fourth International, said in a statement: “we have indicated since 1974 that Tamil homeland, their
nationality; autonomy and the right to self determination should be recognized for a united solution.”
“Not only we campaigned in Sri Lanka on this issue, where we lost lives and suffered untold hardships, but also we took this to the international plane through Fourth
International.”
“At this crucial moment, we appeal to left organizations, trade unions and socialist intellectuals world over to join us in this campaign to arrive at a united solution on
the basis of recognition of Tamil homeland, their nationality, autonomy and the right of self determination,” the NSSP said.
Chamil Jayaneththi of the Left Front represented the Sri Lankan left at the Amsterdam conference. Mr. Jayaneththi, a presidential candidate of the NSSP, reiterated
his party’s position at a meeting in Berlin on Sunday March 9.Also as part of the NSSP’s efforts to mobilise international support, he is due to speak in Paris on
