No nominations from TNA for its rebels?
By Rohan Abeywardena
The two leading Tamil National Alliance (TNA) rebels N. Srikantha and M.K. Sivajilingam who defied the alliance, now face the prospect of not getting nominations from the TNA.
TNA Leader R. Sampanthan yesterday hinted that they are unlikely to get nominations when he declared that “political parties normally don’t give nominations to rebels,” but he insisted that so far no such decision had been taken and it will be decided after relevant party procedures are followed.

Asked whether they would continue to back the UNP at the next general election, Sampanthan said there was no continuing alliance with the UNP, but the future will be decided depending on the circumstances.
Sivajilingam who contested the Presidential election as the sole Tamil contestant in defiance of the TNA when asked what he hoped to do in the event he is not given nominations he simply said “wait and see.”

Srikantha, who managed the campaign for Sivajilingam said they had been vindicated as the TNA decision to support Fonseka only galvanised the Sinhalese to vote in greater numbers for President Rajapaksa.
The veteran politician who has been in politics for more than three decades said, “I am ready for any eventuality.”

Another TNA Parliamentarian who opposed supporting either of the leading candidates P. Sithamparanathan said that it was now more important to work on healing and reconciliation process between the two communities.

TNA is unlikely to have any internal post-mortem on the election as expected by some insiders prior to the next session of Parliament on February 5, when they all converge in Colombo as their leader is about to go abroad to attend his younger brother R. Mahendran’s funeral in London next weekend.

Mahendran (65) died in Vancouver early this week from Kidney complications. He had been living in Canada with his wife having migrated there after the ’83 riots here.
Sampanthan told The Nation yesterday that his brother had also undergone heart surgery recently. They decided to have the funeral in London as his sisters, nephews and nieces were all living there.
Mahendran who was earlier employed by Prima, Trincomalee, had been serving with the Canadian Immigration at the time of his death.
