Rehab Minister says Mrs. Balakumaran and Yogi among them

Rehabilitation and Prisons Reforms Minister Dew Gunasekera says an urgent programme is needed to provide relief to war widows, including wives of the LTTE cadres killed during the war.
Speaking to The Island after meeting groups of war widows in Vavuniya, Jaffna and Kilinochchi over a week ago, Minister Gunasekera emphasized the importance of meaningful measures to alleviate their suffering.
General Secretary of the Communist Party of Sri Lanka, Gunasekera said that among the women whom he had met in Jaffna were the wives of K.V. Balakumaran and Yogiratnam Yogi, a member of the LTTE negotiating team for talks with the then President Ranasinghe Premadasa’s government. The Army killed Balakumaran on the Vanni east front early last year.
Balakumaran was formerly the leader of the Eelam Revolutionary Organisation of Students (EROS) and joined the LTTE in the early 1990s.
Minister Gunasekera acknowledged that there had not been a detailed study on LTTE widows, though various NGOs and government officials from time to time had given different figures since the conclusion of the war in May last year.
He said that his ministry had called for applications from people of the Northern Province before meeting them in three separate groups in Jaffna (July 10), Kilinochchi (11) and Vavuniya (12). Responding to our query, he said that of the 8,000 who had responded to his ministry’s call, about 98 per cent were young women.
Minister Gunasekera said that a considerable number of men and women, too, were held by the military since the conclusion of the war. As they had been members of the LTTE at the time of its collapse on the Vanni front, it would be natural for security forces to investigate their role and also rehabilitate them before their release, Minister Gunasekera said.
He said that he had had an opportunity to discuss the issue of war widows with UN Resident Representative in Colombo Neil Bhune before National Freedom Front (NFF) leader Minister Wimal Weerawansa launched a fast unto death outside the UN compound in Colombo. Minister Gunasekera regretted that their efforts to obtain UN assistance to help war widows could be delayed due to the on- going dispute between Sri Lanka and the UN.

According to Rajapaksa regime’s Rehabilitation and Prisons Reforms minister and Communist Party leader, Dew Gunasekera, the wives of the senior members of the LTTE, K.V. Balakumaran and Yogaratnam Yogi are among the widows needing rehabilitation, The Island reported Monday. Both the LTTE leaders were reportedly seen reaching internment camps run by the Sri Lankan military, by many who went into those camps. The international community was repeatedly telling the LTTE to surrender to Colombo and civilians to get into barbed-wire camps of the Sri Lankan Army. The Army killed Balakumaran on the Vanni east front early last year, The Island says. There were earlier media reports that the leaders were taken to Colombo.

Balakumaran [Left] and Yogaratnam Yogi [Right]British Tamil doctor Velauthapillai Arudkumar, who visited the island recently as part of a ‘Tamil diaspora visit’ organised by Colombo through Selvarasa Pathmanathan alias KP, told TamilNet in an interview in June that when the delegation questioned the Sri Lankan Defence and Intelligence heads on the whereabouts of detained senior political members of the LTTE, the response was that they had no knowledge of them.
The heads of the Sri Lankan defence and the intelligence in turn suggested to the members of the diaspora delegation to come out with any evidence on Balakumaran, Yogi, Puthuvai Ratnathurai and Lawrance Thilagar if they have had any knowledge about them.
Both Balakumaran and Yogi were political leaders of the LTTE. Mr. Balakumaran was earlier the leader of the Eelam Revolutionary Organisation (EROS). Mr Yogaratnam Yogi, on behalf of the LTTE, presided over the surrender of arms during the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) intervention in 1987.

கடந்த சில தினங்களில் போரின் போது கணவர்களை இழந்த பெண்களின் மறுவாழ்வு தொடர்பான கூட்டங்களை அரசு வடபகுதியில் நடத்தியுள்ளது. இலங்கை அரசின் புனர்வாழ்வு மற்றும் சிறை சீர்திருத்தத் துறை அமைச்சர் ட்யூ குணசேகரா அவர்கள் இந்தக் கூட்டங்களை நடத்தியுள்ளார்.
தெள்ளிப்பளையில் ( தெல்லிப்பளையென தேமதுர ஊர்ப்பேர் உலகமெல்லாம் பரவவகை செய்வோம்!) இடம் பெற்ற கூட்டத்தில் விடுதலைப் புலிகளின் மூத்த உறுப்பினர்களான பாலகுமாரன் மற்றும் யோகி ஆகியோரின் மனைவிகளும் அவரை சந்தித்துள்ளனர்.
இச்சந்திப்பின் போது இவர்கள் தமது கணவர்கள் குறித்து தம்மிடம் ஏதும் பேசவில்லை என்றும், திருமதி பாலகுமார் மட்டும் தமது குழந்தைகள் குறித்து தம்மிடம் கேட்டதாகவும் அமைச்சர் ட்யூ குணசேகர தமிழோசையிடம் கூறியுள்ளார்.
அதே போல யோகியின் மனைவி தான் கஷ்டத்தில் இருப்பதாகவும் தனக்கு உதவும்படி கோரியதாகவும் அமைச்சர் கூறுகிறார்.

போரின் இறுதியில் கொல்லப்பட்ட விடுதலைப் புலிகள் இயக்கத்தைச் சேர்ந்த முக்கியத் தலைவர்களின் பெயர் விபரங்களை இலங்கை அரசு வெளியிட்டது. ஆனால் அதில் பாலகுமார் மற்றும் யோகியின் பெயர்கள் இடம்பெறவில்லை.
இவர்களும் வேறு சில தலைவர்களும் அரச படையினரிடம் சரணடைந்ததாக சில ஊடகங்கள் செய்தி வெளியிட்டிருந்தன. மனித உரிமைகளுக்கான யாழ் பல்கலைக் கழக ஆசிரியர்கள் அமைப்பும் இவர்கள் சரணடைந்ததாக கூறியிருந்தது.
எனினும் பாலகுமார் மற்றும் யோகி ஆகியோர் உயிருடன் இருக்கிறார்களா இல்லையா என்பது குறித்து தனக்கு தெரியாது என்று கூறும் ட்யூ குணசேகர அது தொடர்பான விவாதத்தில் இறங்கத் தான் தயாராக இல்லை எனவும் கூறுகிறார்.
அரசால் தடுத்து வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ள விடுதலைப் புலிகளின் உறுப்பினர்களை பராமரிப்பது மட்டுமே தமது பொறுப்பு என்றும், அவர்களின் விசாரணை தொடர்பான விடயங்கள் தனது அதிகார வரம்புக்குள் வராது எனவும் அவர் கூறுகிறார்.
இலங்கை அரசு சுமார் 8000 போராளிகள் தடுப்பு முகாம்களில் வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளதாக கூறுகிறது. ஆனால் அவர்களின் பெயர் விபரங்களை வெளியிட அது தொடர்ந்து மறுத்து வருகிறது.
